Misfits Music @ Moseley Festival 2021

The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the lives of millions of people around the world, keeping us at home, stopping work, preventing us from seeing friends and family and sadly taking the lives of loved ones. Throughout the entirety of the pandemic, we at Misfits Music continued to provide music activities to members of our local community of Moseley (south Birmingham UK) and beyond which ultimately culminated in a fantastic concert on the 25th of July 2021, where we held our first in-person performance since Christmas 2019 and what a concert it was!

The Moseley Rock Collective performed first with strong performances of “Should I stay or Should I go?” by the Clash and “Knocking on Heavens Door” by Bob Dylan under the leadership of Rodrigo. This was the first time that the group had performed together outside in-front of an audience and they did very well considering that this was the first time that many of them had performed in public, ever.

The Misfits Choir performed second with their renditions of “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” by the Sherman Brothers and “You’ve got a friend” by Carole King conducted by Maria. They sang with gusto and confidence as they were on home turf, having rehearsed near weekly in the park. Choirs have had a bad rap through the pandemic as initial studies showed that singing indoors contributed heavily to the spread of the virus, so seeing the group perform was a really proud moment for us.

The Moseley and Cotteridge Misfits performed three songs “On Stilts” by Howard Skempton, “Give it Up” by KC and the Sunshine Band and “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver. Throughout the pandemic, both groups had been rehearsing outdoors and online respectively but having the two groups play together was really special.

Finally, we had something particularly special during the performance, a coming together of all of the groups to play our own rendition of “Take On Me” by A-ha where all of the groups came together and performed as a 45 person ensemble. Over the last few weeks, each group had been working on the piece but only on the day did they come together and combine their efforts. It took a lot of planning and work behind the scenes to ensure that when all the groups came together, the process would be smooth.

We’d like to say a massive thanks to:

and of course all the members that made this such a memorable experience!
