A collaboration with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Saxophone Department

Bridging Musical Generations

The collaboration began with an invitation extended to the conservatoire students, inviting them to experience the rewarding work that community music can provide.

Rob and Reuben visited the conservatoire and presented to the students about the Misfits Music Foundation, the charity’s values and the activities we run. They talked about their respective roles within the charity, touching on leading groups, marketing, and founding the charity.

They then asked the conservatoire students to take the lead in a couple of our B30 Ensemble and Moseley Misfits sessions by preparing and executing a warm-up activity. The idea was to get the students to prepare members musically and mentally for the session.

Following the warm-up, the conservatoire students joined forces with the groups that they were assigned to and would play with the existing members. It provided an environment for these young musicians to share their knowledge and expertise with our members while allowing the students to learn from and chat with them and understand what community music meant to our members.

But the collaboration didn't end there. Last week, the entire Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Saxophone Department joined Moseley Misfits session, where they worked on a new piece to the group's repertoire – "Space" by Biffy Clyro.

The concluson of this teaming up will be a special performance by the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Saxophone Department for Misfits Music's disabled adult’s music group, Dabble and Scrunch, as part of their Christmas concert program.
