The Role
Do you have excellent Financial Skills and want to make a real difference to a small charity with a big impact? If so, we need you!
We are looking for a creative, and solution focussed Finance Manager who enjoys collaboration. This is a key role within our charity to oversee and manage all financial operations. This will include working alongside the Artistic Director and Trustees to set budget, working on annual accounts alongside our external accountant and helping to improve and maintain financial systems. You’ll also manage our day-to-day finance operations including book keeping, monitoring project budgets and producing management reports and accounts.
This role would particularly suit someone with a creative and entrepreneurial mindset, as we are currently exploring several new income models (including a new charity musical instrument shop). We are also exploring the possibility of claiming Orchestra Tax Relief as a way to diversify our income.
This all may necessitate a new company structure to be set up and managed alongside our charity, so that we can grow these elements of our work, all in the aim of funding our core programme of charitable work.
You’ll need a willingness to work closely with the Artistic Director, Trustee (Treasurer) and External Accountant in this role. There is no expectation that you have experience in all listed areas, rather a willingness to learn.
This role would also suit someone who enjoys working as part of a team, and cares about making a positive difference through community, music and the arts.
Key Responsibilities
Working alongside Artistic Director and Trustees to set and monitor budgets
Creating and updating cashflow forecasts
Working alongside our Treasurer to produce management accounts for our Senior Team and Trustees
Working alongside our Trustee (Treasurer) and Artistic Director to refine and improve our financial systems
Monitoring income streams from grants, and earned income
Working alongside our external accountant (and independent examiner) to produce our annual charity accounts
Maintaining book keeping
Handling cash payments, deposits and banking
Assisting with our monthly pay-run
Attending quarterly Trustee meetings alongside Music and Artistic Directors (usually on Friday evenings at The Moseley Exchange or online via Zoom towards the end of each term)
Presenting financial information in several formats including tables, charts and graphs
Working alongside our Development Manager and Artistic Director to set grant fundraising income targets
Proactively work with the whole team to implement and develop new income streams from a financial management perspective
Person Specification
Essential
Ability to manage multiple project budgets
Understanding of “Restricted” and “Unrestricted” income and reserves, and how to monitor these
Experience of book keeping
Excellent spreadsheet skills
Experience producing management accounts, preparing budgets and cashflow forecasts, maintaining accounting records and explaining financial information to non-finance colleagues
To be a creative, positive person with an appetite for problem solving
A good understanding, or willingness to learn about charity accounting
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and manage your time effectively to ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner
Desirable
Prior experience setting up new financial systems
Knowledge of company accounts
Prior experience working within an arts or community organisation
Based in or near Moseley, Birmingham
A finance or accounting qualification
An interest in learning about creative and arts sector tax relief schemes
