A message from Reuben and Rod
"Thank you so much for your suggestions; they are truly appreciated. Your input is important; we always want your fresh ideas.
To help with your recommendations, we thought we would explain some of our decision-making processes, which help us decide what music will work for our groups.
-
Typically, we try to keep each piece between 3-5 mins in length. This means that we can rehearse a variety of several different pieces in a term rather than a couple of longer works. Our approach is that with more variety in the sets, we hope everyone will enjoy at least one piece each term.
-
What makes a piece of music “difficult” is highly subjective. Our efforts are geared towards accessibility and ensuring that we rehearse and perform rewarding and interesting music rather than creating an experience that is overly difficult and not very fun.
-
We are open to a whole range of music; however, we understand that sometimes the same piece of music can have different meanings to different people. We try to balance some suggestions against what we feel promotes a friendly environment during sessions.
-
We are keenly aware of an imbalance of published musical material. Namely the bias of publishing the music of men over women and those in the LGBTQ+ communities. We aim for balanced programmes.

Especially for the Mosley Misfits and the B30 Ensemble, each arrangement requires a lot of time and effort to put together. Each piece is arranged in-house to our unique requirements, which can take weeks. On top of this, parts have to be made and then posted online, and rehearsal videos and audio have to be produced and uploaded to our website. THEN parts are printed, scores are bound, and everything is taken to rehearsals.
We have to be sure that a chosen piece will work before we arrange anything. Otherwise, we risk costing the charity time and funds, which would be difficult to reclaim.
Every song suggestion is stored in a repository where we can refer to it when we need inspiration; it is worth saying that suggestions that come up more than once are viewed very favourably, so perhaps getting others to recommend the same song might be advantageous…
We are a small team. Time constraints, a limited budget, and the fact that we cover multiple roles within the foundation mean that we are not able to implement every song suggestion. However, this doesn't diminish the value of your input.
We look forward to hearing more of your suggestions and if you have any further questions, ask us (either Rod or Reuben) during a break.
